Biographical Information

Hal Steinbrenner inherited the New York Yankees from his father George Steinbrenner after the 2008 season. He began to run the team along with his older brother Hank Steinbrenner when his father became seriously ill in the mid-2000s, and Hank became a formal co-owner upon his father's death in 2010. He was co-owner and managing general partner of the Yankees until Hank passed away in 2020, becoming sole owner at that point.

Older brother Hank was the more public figure of the younger generation of Steinbrenners, mainly because of his tendency to make intemperate remarks to the media, but Hal was described as the steadier hand on the till, who knew the business side of the operation inside-out and was willing to defer to his baseball men, mostly General Manager Brian Cashman, to ensure that the team is performing on the field. Team president Randy Levine also too a leading role in terms of business dealings. When Hank was forced to curtail his activities because of health issues around the mid-2010s, Hal became the effective face of ownership for the team.
