Biographical Information[edit]
Gyu-bong Hwang pitched in the Korea Baseball Organization for 5 years.
Hwang played for the South Korean national team in the 1973 Asian Championship, but the hotel where the Koreans lived caught fire during the event. Hwang jumped from the 3rd floor, and he suffered from a serious back injury. He came back and pitched for South Korea in the 1976 Amateur World Series, 1980 Amateur World Series, 1981 World Games and 1981 Intercontinental Cup. When the KBO was founded in 1982, Hwang joined the Samsung Lions, and he soon became their ace. He started in their first game, and he went 15-11 with a 2.47 ERA while he led the league with 11 saves and 47 appearances. Hwang was 4th in ERA (between Young-ho Kwon and Sung-han Kim), 2nd in wins (tied with Kwon and Sun-hee Lee), 3rd in innings (between Cheol-Sun Bak and Jae-hyun Kim) and 4th in strikeouts (between Ki-ryong Ha and Chang-ho Ceon).
The Seongju native slumped to 6-4 with a 3.67 ERA in 1983, and he soon bounced back in 1984. Hwang went 10-2 with 4 saves and a 3.25 ERA in '84 season, and he led the league in winning percentage. He had a 14-7 record with a 3.04 ERA in 1985, and he was 4th in wins (between Dong-won Choi and Man-sik Kang). Hwang went 3-5 with a 3.96 ERA in 1986, then he announced his retirement. He later became the pitching coach of the Lions from 1987 to 1989.
Overall, Hwang was 48-29 with a 3.09 ERA, struck out 256 and pitched 676 innings in 5 seasons in the KBO.
