Groen was redshirted as a college freshman and allowed three runs, five hits and two walks in one inning in 2019. [1] In '20, he improved to 2-1, 2.57 with a save and a .95 WHIP but he slumped to 2-0, 7.15 as a junior. He signed with the independent Kansas City Monarchs, allowing five runs (four earned) in seven innings. He struck out ten and allowed only two hits but walked seven. He was 1-0 with a 1.69 ERA in three games for the 2022 Ogden Raiders then signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks and was 2-3 with a 5.63 ERA in 12 games for the ACL Diamondbacks Red, fanning 34 in 24 innings.
Having been born in London, he joined Britain's team for the 2022 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers. He pitched one game, relieving former major leaguer Vance Worley with a 5-1 lead in the fifth versus France. He walked both Léo Jiminian and Alexander Perdomo on four pitches then struck out Alfredo Angarita. Ariel Soriano singled and an error on the play by D'Shawn Knowles made it second and third with one run in. Cam Opp relieved and let in an inherited run. Groen had Britain's highest ERA in the event. Britain still qualified for the 2023 World Baseball Classic, their first trip to a World Baseball Classic. [2]
