Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Gregory Santos was originally signed by the Boston Red Sox as an international amateur free agent from the Dominican Republic on August 28, 2015. However, before he reached the majors, he was traded to the San Francisco Giants with Shaun Anderson for infielder Eduardo Nunez on July 26, 2017. It then took him another three plus years to reach the big leagues, as he made his debut for the Giants at the beginning of the 2021 season. He only pitched 3 times that season, with an ERA of 22.50, then added another two games in 2022 during which he allowed 2 runs in 3 2/3 innings. Following that season, he was traded to the Chicago White Sox for minor leaguer Kade McClure.
Santos finally got some significant playing time in the big leagues with the White Sox in 2023, making 60 appearances out of the bullpen and going 2-2, 3.39 with 5 saves. He logged 66 1/3 innings and struck out 66 batters against 17 walks. In spite of what looked like a long minor league apprenticeship, he was still only 23 at the time. He was a pleasant surprise, but with the White Sox starting a major reconstruction of their pitching staff, they agreed to deal him to the Seattle Mariners the following winter, trading him on February 3, 2024 in return for two prospects, P Prelander Berroa and OF Zach DeLoach in addition to a Compensation Round B pick in the 2024 amateur draft (expected to fall around #69). The Mariners were expecting to make Santos one of the key relievers in their bullpen, replacing Justin Topa who had been traded a few days earlier.
