Biographical Information[edit]

Greg Smith has been a long-time scout.

Smith led the Southeastern Conference in hitting in 1987. Undrafted out of college, he signed with the San Diego Padres in June 1988. He was assigned to the Spokane Indians and batted .266/.339/.360 while fielding .985 at first base, his primary position. In 1989, he hit .259/~.344/.381 for the Charleston Rainbows; his 8 home runs were third on the club after John Kuehl and Nikco Riesgo. In 1990, Smith's batting line for the Riverside Red Wave was just .221/.305/.346 with 107 strikeouts in 393 AB. He retired as a player at that point.

Greg then became a scout. From 1990-1996, he was an area scout for the San Diego Padres, covering Florida through Maryland. From 1997-2004, he was Director of Scouting for the Detroit Tigers he was also Director of Player Development from 2002-2004. From 2005-2007, he was a special assignment scout for the Tigers. He was responsible for the signings of Jair Jurrjens, Curtis Granderson and Joel Zumaya.

In November 2007, Smith became Director of Scouting for the Pirates. In his first draft with the club, he picked Pedro Alvarez.
