Biographical Information[edit]

Grant McCray's father was a big league outfielder. However, he's most assuredly known for something he did in AAA ball. Grant's father, Rodney McCray, famously ran through a wall in Civic Stadium in Portland, OR attempting to make a running catch. (The batter, Chip Hale, got a triple on the play.) The junior McCray is a player cut from the same cloth as the senior McCray - a rangy defensive center fielder with great speed.

"He can run and he plays exceptional defense. He has all the tools. He grew up around the game. He knows what it’s like. He’s not overwhelmed." - Rodney McCray speaking about his son

Grant McCray entered the 2019 Amateur Draft out of high school and was chosen by the San Francisco Giants in the third round. He signed on June 11 for a $697,500 bonus and was sent to the Arizona League to suit up for the AZL Giants Black. In 48 games, he slashed .270/.379/.335. He hit 5 doubles, 2 triples, and 1 home run. He stole 17 bases, but was caught 13 times. He also made 3 errors in center field, but also had 3 assists.

After the coronavirus pandemic-related minor league hiatus of 2020, McCray was back at the rookie league level in 2021, this time with the ACL Giants Orange of the reconfigured Arizona Complex League. His .309/.400/.455 slash line earned him a late-season call-up to the Low-A West league (formerly the California League) and spent the last few weeks of the season with the San Jose Giants. He played 45 games in 2021, and slashed a combined .274/.342/.422. He didn't attempt as many steals - he went 7 for 9 - but added a little more extra base punch to his game with 5 doubles, 3 long balls, and 3 triples.

He returned to San Jose for the 2022 season, and the California League regained its old name. In 106 games, he stole 35 bases and was caught 10 times and had 9 outfield assists, including 2 double plays. He also slashed .291/.383/.525. His power production went to another level with 21 doubles and 21 home runs, along with 9 triples. For the second consecutive year, he was moved up a level at the end of the season. He finished 2022 with 14 games with the Eugene Emeralds of the high-A Northwest League, where he hit .269/.387/.423. He was successful in all 8 stolen base attempts.

McCray was back in Eugene for 2023. He had a miserable April, where he slashed a mere .149/.284/.270. But he followed that up with a strong May (.295/.395/.514).
