Grand Rapids Rippers

From BR Bullpen

The Grand Rapids Rippers were charter members of the Western League in its 1894 revival which eventually led to the present American League but the Rippers only spent one year in the loop. The Grand Rapids, MI club finished fifth (62-64) under player-manager Rasty Wright (.423/~.484/.633). Wright led the WL in doubles (54) and runs (217), tied for second in average, was approximately second in OBP and third with 233 hits. Outscored 1,398-1,382 (an average of 11.1-11.0), Grand Rapids led the league in both runs and runs allowed. Billy Rhines (24-22, 5.63) was clearly the staff ace. Supporting Wright were the other two outfielders, Fred Carroll (.389/~.444/.674, 23 triples, 22 HR, 223 hits, second with 51 doubles) and Bill George (.423/~.464/.668), tied with Wright for second in average. The most notable name was 1B Bob Caruthers (.331/~.390/.464).
