Biographical Information[edit]
Playing for the Oakland Athletics, Gonzalo Marquez went 5 for 8 in the 1972 Postseason, including 3 for 5 in the World Series against the Cincinnati Reds. His one career home run, hit as a member of the Chicago Cubs on September 21, 1973 came off Steve Rogers of the Montreal Expos. He started the game at first base and went 1 for 4.
He played and managed for 19 years in the Venezuelan Winter League, primarily for the Caracas Leones (Lions). He had a lifetime batting average of .288 in 2,709 at bats.
When he was in the majors, his year of birth was listed as 1946, but he was in fact 6 years older, meaning he was already in his mid-30's by the time he reached the big leagues.
