Biographical Information

Infielder Glen Stewart was signed as an amateur free agent by the New York Giants in 1937. He played his first year of fifteen seasons in pro ball with the Greenwood Giants of the class C Cotton States League. Glen spent three plus seasons in the minors (1937-1940) before getting his first chance at the major league game, when he debuted with the Giants on June 26, 1940. Stewart appeared in just 15 games in the '40 season, hitting .167.

Stewart would spend two more years in the minors (1941-1942) before getting his second chance in the majors. He spent the next two seasons (1943-1944) with the Philadelphia Blue Jays of the National League. They had acquired Glen in a deal with the Brooklyn Dodgers who had received him in a trade with the Giants on December 4, 1940. In his two year run with the Blue Jays club Glen played every position in the infield and also caught one game. During his three seasons in the big leagues Stewart appeared in 243 games with a .213 batting average. He fielded all of his various spots on the field at a .955 clip.

Glen was back in the minors for the 1945 season, having one of his best years, hitting .331 along with 86 RBI's in 176 games for the Oakland Oaks, of the Pacific Coast League. Stewart spent the rest of his career in the minors with the last three seasons (1949-1951) as a player-manager in the Wisconsin State League, Cotton States League and Kitty League. In his 13 seasons in the minors he hit at a 2.99 average with 28 home runs while appearing in 1,437 games.

After baseball Stewart worked for the United States Postal Service until his retirement. He died from heart failure on February 11, 1997 in Memphis, TN.
