Biographical Information

Gilberto Rondon was a member of the Houston Astros starting rotation during most of May and June of 1976. He did not pitch particularly well going 2-2 with a 5.05 ERA in 7 starts. Throughout his career, he was even worse out of the bullpen with a 7.00 ERA in 12 games. He resurfaced again as a September call-up for the Chicago White Sox in 1979. His ERA of 3.72 was respectable, but he gave up 11 hits and 6 walks in 9 2/3 innings while only striking out 3. He gave up at least one run in all but one of his four appearances. The exception was on September 23rd against the Seattle Mariners, when he pitched 1 and 2/3 innings, giving up 1 hit and 1 walk.

In 1989, Gil played for the Orlando Juice of the Senior Professional Baseball Association. In 1990, Rondon played for the Fort Myers Sun Sox, also of the Senior Professional Baseball Association. He pitched in 9 games and was 2-1 with 5.73 ERA when the league folded.

Rondon coached for the Taiwan national team in the 2005 Baseball World Cup. He coached for the Monclova Steelers in 2011.

Gilberto played for the Santurce Crabbers and Caguas Creoles of the Puerto Rico Winter Baseball League. He is the son of Dominican pitcher Diomedes Olivo (and the nephew of Chi-Chi Olivo); his mother, Crucita Rondón, met Olivo when he was pitching for the Senadores de San Juan in the winter of 1952-53 and had a relationship from which Gilberto was born.
