Biographical Information[edit]

Outfielder Gil Carter showed a great deal of power during three seasons in the Chicago Cubs organization. He was scouted and signed by Buck O'Neil.

After hitting 17 home runs for the Carlsbad Potashers in 1958, Carter clubbed 34 homers for Carlsbad in 1959 to lead the Sophomore League. Facing pitcher Wayne Schaper of the Odessa Dodgers on August 11th of that year, he hit a home run that traveled close to 700 feet, possibly the longest hit in minor league history.

Carter hit 21 home runs for the St. Cloud Rox of the Northern League in 1960, his final pro season. He later returned to his hometown of Topeka, Kansas and played semipro ball. He died in 2015 at age 83, which would give him a birth year of 1932 - three years older than his 1935 birth year listed in other sources.
