The Gigantes del Nordeste (Northeast Giants) were created as a Dominican League expansion team in 1996. Based in San Francisco de Macoris and under an ownership group led by former major league player Julian Javier and local businessmen.
After two mediocre seasons the Gigantes had an abysmal third year as they set a league record for fewest wins and finished 9-51. The investors decided to sell the team to a new owner, who renamed them the Pollos del Cibao.
