Biographical Information[edit]

Gerry Davis was in 49 major league games, with an impressive .301 batting average and a .370 OBP. His minor league batting average, in seven seasons, was also .301.

He set a Carolina League record with 161 walks in 1981, while putting up a .306/.504/.613 line in 611 plate appearances.

He was up in the majors in 1983 and 1985 with the Padres; in 1984, a year in which he did not come up, he posted a line of .302/.434/.444 at Las Vegas, where teammates included Ozzie Guillen, Bruce Bochy and John Kruk. The 1984 Padres, however, went to the 1984 World Series on the strength of outfield talent such as Tony Gwynn, Kevin McReynolds and rookie Carmelo Martinez.

“Most of our careers, (Tony Gwynn) was always a step ahead of me. He would get called up a level and then I would get called up to take his place. We actually met in Triple-A when he was down on a rehab assignment. We roomed together at the time. We’ve been friends ever since.” - Gerry Davis, quoted at NJ.com
