Biographical Information[edit]

Gerardo Sanchez pitched in the minors and played for Mexico national baseball team.

Sanchez was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 42nd round of the 2009 Amateur Draft out of junior college, but he didn't sign. He proceeded on to UNM, going 8-3 with three saves, a 2.76 ERA and 95 K in 78 1/3 IP as a senior. The Houston Astros then signed him in 2012 as an undrafted free agent (the scout was Mike Brown) [1], and he was 2-0 with a 1.88 ERA in ten games for the GCL Astros. He had a 1.69 ERA in 6 appearances for the Lancaster JetHawks in 2013, but he struggled with the Quad Cities River Bandits as his ERA was 5.22 in 30 games.

The Astros then released him, and Sanchez collected 18 saves with a 3.54 ERA for the Rockford Aviators in 2014. He was sixth in the Frontier League in saves. He represented Mexico in the 2015 Premier 12, when the country had to rely heavily on Mexican-Americans due to disagreements between the Mexican League and the Mexican baseball federation. He pitched 3 2/3 innings with a run allowed against Japan. He then completed 3 2/3 shutout innings against South Korea, but he surrendered 2 runs in 1/3 of an inning against the USA. [2]

The Toros de Tijuana then signed him, and he had a solid 1.47 ERA in 41 games in 2016. He also pitched 23 games for the Tomateros de Culiacan in winter ball, but his ERA was 5.23. Sanchez's ERA was 3.38 in 9 games for the Toros in 2017, and he collected 12 saves with a 3.64 ERA in 29 games for the Bravos de Leon. He was 10th in the LMB in saves, between Jairo Asencio and Fernando Nieve. He was 3-3 with a 4.74 ERA in Culiacan in the winter. The Mexican League went to a two-season format in 2018. Sanchez was 1-2 with a 6.08 ERA for Tijuana, and he allowed 4 runs in 8 1/3 innings for the Tecolotes de los Dos Laredos in the spring. He went 2-3 with a 4.45 ERA in the fall, and his ERA was 2.04 in Culianan in the winter.

Sanchez pitched 62 games with a 3.54 ERA for the Toros in 2019, finishing 5th in the LMB in appearances. He was 4-0 with a 1.96 ERA in the winter for the Tomateros. He also appeared for Culiacán in the 2020 Caribbean Series, and he pitched 2 1/3 shutout innings. The 2020 LMB season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and he was 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA in the winter. Sanchez slumped to 1-3 with a 6.16 ERA with Tijuana in 2021, and he went 5-3 with a 3.94 ERA in 35 games for the Guerreros de Oaxaca in 2022. He surrendered 2 runs in 3 1/3 innings for the Diablos Rojos del Mexico in 2023, then his professional career ended.
