Biographical Information[edit]

George Weiss was hired to run the New York Yankees farm system in 1932. He became General Manager of the Yankees from 1948 to 1960. During his tenure, the club won ten pennants and seven World Series. After leaving the Yankees, he was the first president and general manager of the New York Mets.

Before his tenure with the Yankees, he was team president of the New Haven Indians and New Haven Profs of the Eastern League. In December of 1923, on his way to the winter meetings in Chicago, IL, the train in which he was riding crashed. New Haven's manager, Wild Bill Donovan, with whom Weiss had switched berths earlier, was killed in the crash, while Weiss escaped with minor injuries. Philadelphia Phillies owner William F. Baker was also on the train, but was unhurt.
