Biographical Information

Silent George Twombly played five years in the majors, primarily with the Cincinnati Reds. In the same years that he was with the Reds, he also played some with the minor league Baltimore Orioles.

The book The Young Babe Ruth mentions that Twombly had appendicitis in 1914. In 1916 he led the International League in home runs while playing for the Orioles. He also played in the minors at Richmond, Providence and New Haven.

Although historically the double has been an easier achievement than the triple, George Twombly managed to hit five triples in 1914 without hitting a single double. That is a record. He therefore also holds the record for most triples in a season without another extra base hit, as he didn't homer once in that season either. 74 years later, Rafael Belliard came a triple shy of matching Twombly.

He was the brother of Babe Twombly.
