Babe Twombly hit .377 in his second and last season in the big leagues. Fifteen of his hits that year were pinch-hits, and he led the National League in that category in 1921.
The May 9, 1914 issue of the New York Times stated that Twombly (known even then as "Babe"), "Lehigh University's fast left fielder", broke his leg when he slid into a fielder at second base.
He played in the California Winter League from 1924-1927, hitting .295. Source: The California Winter League.
Twombly played for the Hollywood Stars for at least two years in the late 1920s.
He was the brother of George Twombly, who played several years in the majors. Babe was also at Lehigh University at the same time as pitcher Cy Twombly.
