Biographical Information[edit]
Cy Twombly was a key figure in Washington and Lee University athletics for over 50 years. He coached the swim team for 39 years, and also was golf coach. He played professional and semi-pro ball for 19 years. Source: Washington and Lee University Hall of Fame.
He achieved his major league victory on July 1, 1921 against the 1921 St. Louis Browns. George Sisler didn't get a hit against him.
His son, also named Cy Twombly (1928-2011) was one of the most important American painters of the second half of the 20th Century.
