Biographical Information

George Stutz was a 37-year-old rookie with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1926. Stutz had started his minor league career in 1908, and thus had played pro ball for a very long time beforehand. He appeared in six games with the Phillies in August, getting nine at-bats and not achieving a hit. In the field he played shortstop.

Stutz was born, and died, in Philly, so his brief time in the majors was a homecoming. He was not the oldest player on the team, however, as the average age was over 30. Al Nixon was 40 and Cy Williams was 38. Manager Art Fletcher was 41, only a few years older than Stutz.

He has gotten some attention for one of his nicknames, "Satan". No other major leaguer, through 2019, has had that as a nickname.
