Biographical Information[edit]
George Shears went 20-10 for the 1911 Paris Bourbonites of Paris, KY, and then came to the majors in April of 1912 with the New York Highlanders for four games. Not a single pitcher on the team that year had a winning record, so George, with his 0-0 record, at least had as many wins as losses.
Sporting Life of May 11, 1912, described George as an "accomplished pianist". The Washington Times of July 14, 1912, reported that Shears (described as "lanky") was released by the Highlanders to the Albany club of the New York State League, but that the Highlanders might give him another trial the following year.
George was in the minors in 1913-1915, giving his best performance for the 1914 Hamilton Hams, for whom he was 10-8 in a partial season. He appears to have tied for the most victories on the staff.
