Biographical Information[edit]
George McAvoy appeared in one game with the 1914 Philadelphia Phillies, getting one at-bat but not playing in the field.
He was born in East Liverpool, OH, in eastern Ohio not far from Pittsburgh, PA.
In the minors he played second base, third and shortstop. He spent several years in the Texas League.
After he played in the majors, he changed his name to George Robert Carey, with Carey being his mother's maiden name. He died in Florida in 1952. Source: SABR research.
He is apparently not related to Wickey McAvoy, who was also playing major league ball in 1914 in Philadelphia, although with the other team in town, the 1914 Philadelphia Athletics. Wickey was born and died in Rochester, NY.
