Biographical Information[edit]

George Hausmann was the regular second baseman for the New York Giants of 1944 and 1945. Hausmann got a chance to play because the Giants' previous second baseman, Mickey Witek, was in the service during those two seasons. George had been playing in the minors since 1938. In 1943 he hat hit .298 with the New Orleans Pelicans.

At 5' 5" tall, he was one of baseball's shortest players. He led the National League in sacrifice hits in 1944 and set a Mexican League record with 27 sacrifice hits in 1947.

Hausmann was one of the players recruited to play in Mexico in 1946, and was suspended by Major League Baseball as a result. The suspension was lifted and he played in the majors in 1949 playing 33 games for the Giants. His total of sacrifices in 1947 would remain a Mexican League record for 49 years before Arnoldo Castro topped it in 1996.

He continued to play minor league ball from 1950-1956.

Oddly, the only other major leaguer (through 2008) with the last name Hausmann, Clem Hausmann, also played in the majors in 1944-1945 and 1949.
