Biographical Information[edit]
George Ewell at age 20 played one game in the new National Association in 1871. Although he was born, and died, in Philadelphia, PA, his one game was played for the Cleveland Forest Citys in Washington, DC against the Washington Olympics on June 26, 1871. George went on to become an oysterman for many years. [1]
George had previously played for the amateur Philadelphia Keystones club during 1867-1870 and also for the amateur Washington Olympics club in 1870. He may have been paid for his services - in the 1870 census his profession is listed as Base Ballist. His name may sometimes have been spelled Youell. [2]
