Biographical Information[edit]

First baseman George Dummar played in the Baltimore Orioles system in 1980 and 1981.

He was taken by Baltimore in the first round of the January 1980 amateur draft, the same round as outfielder Dave Gallagher and pitcher Craig McMurtry.

Between the Bluefield Orioles and Miami Orioles in 1980, he hit .186/.272/.242 with no home runs and 15 RBI in 64 games. He batted .201/.318/.264 with two dingers and 18 RBI in 47 games between the same two clubs in 1981.

He later played in Italy from 1983 to 1985. He hit .357/.495/.669 for Milano in 1983 and was 3-10 with a 3.48 ERA as one of their three most-used hurlers. In the high-flying aluminum bat league, he produced at a .351/.532/.714 clip with 19 homers in 60 games in 1984. He allowed one run in five innings. In 1985, he batted .291/.493/.519 with 43 walks and 20 HBP in 59 games for Milano, going 2-5 with a 3.82 ERA.

Overall, he batted .193/.294/.252 in his brief minor league career. In Italy, he hit .334/.509/.638 with 127 runs, 136 RBI, 148 walks and 39 homers in 158 games, while going 5-15 with a 3.57 ERA on the mound.

After his playing days, he coached for Branford High School, going 138-75 and winning two state titles.

His son, also named George Dummar, pitched for Quinnipiac University from 2010 to 2013.

He died at 54 from glioblastoma, a type of brain cancer.
