Biographical Information

Catcher George Dickey was the brother of Hall of Famer Bill Dickey. George, also a catcher, played six years in the majors and nine in the minors. Unfortunately, he lost three prime years (ages 27-29 during 1943-1945) to service in World War II.

His major league managers were Joe Cronin, Jimmie Dykes and Ted Lyons. In the minors, Rogers Hornsby was his manager and teammate for part of 1940 with the Oklahoma City Indians of the Texas League.

After baseball he went into the investment business in Little Rock, AR. The Arkansas Travelers of the Texas League play in Dickey-Stephens Park, named after George and his brother Bill along with two businessmen named Stephens who were friends and business associates of the Dickeys.

Baseball Digest from March 1994 says that after baseball brother Bill worked in George's securities business and was happy, but George's death at age 61 was shattering for Bill.

The SABR biography of Bill says that the Dickeys were a baseball family with father John and brother Gus both having played semi-pro ball. He is also mentioned in the The Ultimate Minor League Baseball Road Trip.
