Biographical Information[edit]

Starting pitcher George Cook spent five years in the minor leagues, playing from 1947 to 1951.

He served in the US Army during World War II. He began his baseball career with the St. Petersburg Saints, appearing in 11 games for them in 1947. The following year, with the Sparta Saints, he was 12-7 with a 2.56 ERA in 34 games. He also appeared in 12 games for St. Petersburg that season. He had the most productive year of his career in 1949, going 21-12 with a 3.07 ERA in 36 games for Sparta. He tied for second in the Georgia State League in victories (behind Michael Rossi's 25) and was third in innings pitched (276, behind Rossi's 325 and Noel Oquendo's 297). In 1950, he was 3-7 with a 5.46 ERA in 12 games for the Palatka Azaleas and in 1951, he finished 10-3 with a 5.24 ERA in 20 games (16 starts) for the Dublin Green Sox.

After baseball, he worked for the Sparta Furniture Manufacturing Company and taught Sunday School for over 50 years.
