Biographical Information[edit]
Gene Kern pitched in the minor leagues from 1948 to 1955, all in the Brooklyn Dodgers organization. He missed the 1951 and 1952 seasons, presumably due to military service at the time of the Korean War.
His first season was with the Cambridge Dodgers of the Class D Eastern Shore League in 1948 when he went 9-3, 2.60 in 17 games. The otherwise obscure circuit made the news in August of that season when there were three no-hitters pitched in a span of just four days. The first two came in sperate games on August 16th, with Gene getting his against the Federalsburg A's in a 10-0 romp, while Ed Black of the Salisbury Cardinals pulled the same trick on the Milford Red Sox by a score of 4-0. The dust had barely settled when on August 19th, Ed Santulli of the Rehoboth Beach Pirates also pitched a no-hitter against Federalsburg, this one ending with a 10-0 score.
Gene had his best professional season the following year with the Asheville Tourists of the Tri-State League, finishing at 17-11 with a 3.51 ERA in 32 games. In 1950, he was with the Danville Dodgers of the Three-I League, going 10-3, 3.54. His career was then interrupted for two full seasons before he reprised it in 1953 with the Pueblo Dodgers of the Western League, for which he also pitched in 1954. He went 9-9, 5.18 the first year and 9-11, 4.42 the second. He pitched just once for the Elmira Pioneers of the Eastern League in 1955 before his career ended.
