Biographical Information[edit]

Pitched Edward Black, also called Ed Black, had a short minor league career, in 1948 and 1949, both seasons playing in the St. Louis Cardinals organization.

His first year, 1948, was in the Class D Eastern Shore League for the Salisbury Cardinals, where he went 16-5, 2.23 in 23 games. He was the league ERA champion. The otherwise obscure low-level circuit made the news in August of that year when three no-hitters were thrown in the span of four days. The first two came on the same day, August 16th, with Ed defeating the Milford Red Sox, 4-0 and, in a separate game, Gene Kern of the Cambridge Dodgers pulling the trick against the Federalsburg A's, 12-0. The dust had barely settled when on August 19th, it was the turn of Ed Santulli of the Rehoboth Beach Pirates to pitch another no-no, also against Federalsburg, this one ending with a score of 10-0.

Black seemed destined for a nice career at that point, but he only appeared in two other professional games, with the Winston-Salem Cardinals of the Carolina League in 1949. he had no decisions and never pitched again, presumably due to some type of arm injury.
