Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Gaudencio Aguirre had a very long career in the Mexican League, from 1995 to 2017. He first appeared in the Liga with the Olmecas de Tabasco and was with them until 2001, apart from a brief stint in the CPBL with the Chinatrust Whales in 1999. He then was a mainstay with the Sultanes de Monterrey for a decade, until 2010. He then returned to Tabasco until 2016, and also pitched for Delfines de Ciudad del Carmen that season, He last appeared in the league with the Generales de Durango in 2017, when he was 44 years old.

During all that time, he also pitched winter ball in the Mexican Pacific League, mainly with the Tomateros de Culiacan and the Venados de Mazatlan. Mainly a relief pitcher, he appeared in over 1,000 games overall, but his records are incomplete as stats for his first four seasons are not yet available in the database, and those for 2004 are missing as well. In all, he took part in 23 seasons at the top level in Mexico. In his best year, 2010, he went 6-5, 2.71 in 61 games for Monterrey, also picking up 17 saves. In 2016, he claimed the Mexican League record for games pitched when he appeared in his 933rd game for Ciudad del Carmen, moving past José Luis García. When he retired, his career ERA of 3.36 was second-best among active pitchers.

On May 31, 2001, he surrendered a historic homer as he gave up the 454th homer hit by Nelson Barrera, breaking the Mexican League record held until then by Hector Espino.
