Biographical Information[edit]
Gary Wiencek followed in the footsteps of his father Dick Wiencek as a minor league player and a scout.
Gary was picked by the Texas Rangers in the 36th round of the 1973 amateur draft, by the California Angels in the 37th round of the 1974 amateur draft and the Detroit Tigers in the 12th round of the 1976 amateur draft (one pick before Rick Peters). He split the summer between the Bristol Tigers (9 for 70, 2 2B, 3B, HR, 18 BB, 31 K, 6 R, 5 RBI in 26 G) and the Lakeland Tigers (7 for 46, 2B, 11 BB, 13 K, R, 4 RBI in 21 G). He fielded .978 in 36 games in the outfield and .950 in 6 games at catcher. He signed Phil Stephenson as an Oakland A's scout.
