Biographical Information[edit]

Gary LaRocque played three years in the minor leagues, managed in the Los Angeles Dodgers chain and worked in the New York Mets and St. Louis Cardinals front offices.

LaRocque was picked in the 14th round of the 1975 amateur draft by the Milwaukee Brewers. He debuted with the Newark Co-Pilots, hitting .208/~.385/.229 and leading the New York-Penn League with 67 walks. He also led league second basemen with a .976 fielding percentage. He also was with the Thetford Mines Miners briefly that year, going 2 for 16 with two walks.

In 1976, Gary was with the Burlington Bees and batted .281/~.359/.341 in 114 games. He stole 27 bases in 34 tries and scored 8 6runs. He laid down 13 successful sacrifice hits to tie Mark Woodbrey for the Midwest League lead. He was fifth in the MWL in runs scored. He fielded .959 at second in 69 games (second-best among those with 50+ games there) and fielded .988 in 43 at shortstop (second-best among those with 40+ games there). LaRocque's average, steals and runs were almost identical to the guy right in front of him in the Baseball Guide's recap of the MWL season, Carney Lansford (.287, 87 R, 26 SB).

In his final season as a minor leaguer, LaRocque made it to AA with the Holyoke Millers. He mostly played the outfield (72 games) but saw some time at both second and third. He batted .236/~.329/.264, laid down 14 sacrifice bunts (tied with Tony Bernazard for third in the Eastern League) and stole 18 bases in 26 tries.

LaRocque managed Dodger farm clubs from 1981 to 1988, spending four years at AA. He scouted for the Dodgers from 1989 to 1997, then was the Scouting Director for the Mets in 1998 and assistant scouting director from 1999 to 2003. As a scout, he signed Angel Pagan. He then became the Director of Player Development in 2004. In 2011, LaRocque is a Special Assistant to the GM for the Cardinals, a job he has held since at least 2008.
