Biographical Information[edit]
Gary Boyd pitched briefly in the majors, spending the final two months of the 1969 season with the Cleveland Indians. In 8 appearances, including 3 starts, he went 0-2 with an ERA of 9.00, allowing 11 runs in as many innings. Control was an issue as he issued 14 walks in spite of gathering 9 strikeouts.
He was originally signed by the Indians as an amateur free agent out of Junipero Serra High School in Gardena, CA and pitched in their system from 1965 to 1971. He never reached double figures in wins in any minor league season, peaking at 9-8 in 27 games for the Savannah Indians of the Southern League in 1970. He was a power pitcher, striking out over 100 batters in each of his first three professional seasons, and while he did walk a few, his brief major league stint was an exception as he normally struck out more batters than he walked. In 1969, however, he did walk 60 batters while striking out 61 in 18 games for the AAA Portland Beavers before his call-up to the Show. He completed his professioonal career with one season in the Chicago White Sox organization, with the Tucson Toros of the Pacific Coast League in 1972.
Overall, he went 46-52 in 8 minor league seasons, with an ERA of 4.26 and 644 strikeouts in 866 innings.
