Biographical Information[edit]

Relief pitcher Gabby Rodriguez began his professional career in 1987. He was taken by the Chicago Cubs in the 14th round of the 1987 amateur draft, a couple picks ahead of pitcher David Nied and ahead of veterans Ron Coomer and Gerald Williams. He was signed by scout Gene Handley.

After a middling initial showing, he posted three great seasons in succession. In 1988, he had a 1.51 ERA in 53 appearances for the Peoria Chiefs. In 1989, his mark was 2.00 in 36 games for the Winston-Salem Spirits and in 1990, he had a 1.69 mark in 18 games between the Geneva Cubs and Charlotte Knights. He had been pitching in leagues below his age level, so despite his performances, 1990 was his final campaign.

Overall, Rodriguez was 9-10 with a 2.29 ERA in 131 games (5 starts) over four seasons. In 220 innings, he allowed 167 hits and 102 walks, while striking out 185 batters.
