Fukushima, Fukushima
Fukushima is the capital of Fukushima Prefecture on the east coast of Japan's largest island, Honshu. It was prominently in the news in 2011, as the tsunami that followed the March 11th earthquake that devastated the region flooded a large nuclear power plant located near the city. As a result, the plant's cooling system was disabled, provoking the meltdown of three of its four reactors in one of the most significant nuclear accidents in history. The civilian population was evacuated from an area of 30 kilometers around the plant, and the evacuation order remained in effect for a number of years.
