Biographical Information

Fred Cambria pitched in professional baseball from 1969 to 1973.

A Political Science major at Saint Leo University in (where else?) St. Leo, FL, Fred played high school baseball at St. Pascal Baylon High School in Queens. It is just a coincidence that his last name is the same as the neighborhood he was born in. He had a 3-10 record as a high school senior, but was more successful in college, as he received the Outstanding College Athlete of America award in 1969.

Fred was chosen by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 3rd round of the 1969 amateur draft. He began his professional pitching career with the York Pirates in the Eastern League, throwing a perfect game on July 15, 1969 and finishing the season at 9-2, 2.16. In 1970, he began the year with the Columbus Jets in the International League, where he went 12-7, 4.17, then was promoted to Pittsburgh in late August. He made 6 appearances in the bigs, going 1-2, 3.61. After that promising start, he suffered arm troubles which slowed him down. In 1971, with the Charleston Charlies in the IL, he was only 0-3, 5.56 and went on the disabled list in May. In 1972, he had bursitis, and as a result, he switched to a submarine delivery. His record with Charleston was 2-0, 5.54. He was released by the Pirates after the season and signed with the New York Yankees in mid-1973. In his last go-round, he had no record with a 4.24 ERA with the West Haven Yankees in the Eastern League.

Cambria was coach at St. Leo College from 1990-1991 and pitching coach of the Spokane Indians from 1991-1992.
