Biographical Information[edit]
Frank Marsh was the first black player for the Johnson City Cardinals [1], hitting .289/.477/.465 in 1954 with 18 steals, 49 walks and 40 runs in 44 games, fielding .932 in the outfield. Despite his limited time, he tied George Pfister for 4th in the Appalachian League in swipes. [2]
Despite his fine play, it was his only season in the minors. He then played for several teams in the dying days of the Negro Leagues - the Kansas City Monarchs, Birmingham Black Barons and Detroit Stars. [3] He was the starting center fielder and leadoff hitter for the East in the 1956 East-West Game. He was assistant coach at Grambling State University and coached summer basketball camps at Bishop State Community College. [4]
