Biographical Information[edit]

Frank Gatins played two years in the National League and had a long minor league career.

The book Bad Bill Dahlen indicates that the Brooklyn Superbas purchased Gatins in 1901 from Hartford, where he had been managed by former Brooklyn manager Billy Barnie, who "recommended him strongly". He started the 1901 season with a sore arm.

Gatins was involved in a triple play on May 22, 1901. The batter hit a liner to Bill Dahlen at shortstop who threw the ball to Joe Kelley at first to double the runner off first base. Kelley threw the ball to Gatins at third, but the runner from second had already rounded the base, so Gatins threw the ball to catcher Duke Farrell who tagged out that runner.

A New York Times article from December 7, 1903, says that Gatins had played with Milwaukee in 1903 and was signed to play for Newark in the coming season.

The Sporting Life of April 11, 1908 states that Troy "secured" Gatins from New Orleans.

The Sporting Life of November 25, 1911 carries some information about the recently-deceased Frank Gatins by a sports editor of the Johnstown Tribune. Gatins learned to play ball on the back lots of Johnstown, and "played in many leagues" including New Orleans and Utica. He ran a hotel in Newark, NJ, but less than a year before his death he came back to Johnstown when his father died. Frank died of pneumonia.
