Biographical Information[edit]

First baseman Francisco Mendez began his professional career in 1998.

He was signed by the Arizona Diamondbacks and played for the Lethbridge Black Diamonds, hitting .233/.378/.417 in 20 games in 1998. He moved south of the border following the campaign, joining the Monterrey Sultanes, with whom he remained through 2001. He was with Dos Laredos Tecolotes in 2002 and in 2003, he played for the Sultanes and Reynosa Broncos. He showed glimpses of future success that year, hitting .293/.377/.459 with 11 home runs and 45 RBI in 91 games. He returned to Monterrey in for 2004, 2005 and 2006. With the Dorados de Chihuahua in 2007, he hit .340/.438/.585 with 24 home runs and 81 RBI in 104 games; he then hit .318/.411/.490 with seven home runs and 30 RBI in 54 games for the Algodoneros de Guasave over the winter. In 2008, he batted .301/.411/.452 with 11 home runs and 52 RBI for Chihuahua and in 2009, he hit .310/.415/.437 with seven home runs and 40 RBI. He hit .338/.485/.556 with 19 home runs, 88 RBI, 104 walks and only 77 strikeouts in 106 games for Chihuahua in 2010. Though he slumped to .272/.402/.426 with 11 home runs and 44 RBI in 86 games – now with the Rojos del Aguila de Veracruz – he made his fourth straight All-Star Game in 2011. He did not regain his 2007 to 2010 form in the succeeding seasons.
