Ferris State University was founded as Big Rapids Industrial School in 1884. It was known as Ferris Institute from 1898 to 1963 and then Ferris State College until 1987.
Jim Command, Carmen Fanzone and Gary Taylor were the only major league players to come out of Ferris State. Umpire Jeff Kellogg and owner Tom Monaghan went here as well, as did minor league pitcher Jeff Hoffman.
Ferris State was a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1973-1994 and still competes in the conference in other sports.
