Erwin Aces

The Erwin Aces played one year in the Appy League, going 53-53 in 1943 to finish third in the four-team league. They were 24-28 in the first half (2nd) and 29-25 in the second half (third). In the playoffs, though (every team participated), they beat the Johnson City Cardinals 3 games to 1 then stunned the first-place 74-35 Bristol Twins 4 games to 3 in the finals. They scored 664 runs (second to Bristol) and allowed 711 (third). Reid Gowan was one of the best pitchers (7-3, 3.66 RA) and hitters (.411/~.429/.496). Also providing punch were OF Dick Sipek (.424/~.471/.605 in 37 games) and 1B/Manager Jim Poole (.318/~.440/.442). The next year, they became the Erwin Cubs.
