Biographical Information[edit]

Big lefthander Erik Miller was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 4th round of the 2019 amateur draft out of Stanford University. In his junior season with the Cardinals, he had gone 8-3, 3.14 as a full-time starting pitcher.

He began his professional career in 2019 with the GCL Phillies West, but quickly moved up to the Williamsport Crosscutters of the New York-Penn League and then the Lakewood Blue Claws of the South Atlantic League, a more normal starting place for a pitcher from a top college baseball program. As is often the case for pitchers coming off a full season as a starter in college, his innings total was kept low, with 36 in 11 games, and a record of 1-0, 1.50. He was forced to sit out the 2020 season when the minor leagues were shut down by the Coronavirus pandemic, then in 2021 he was again kept to a low innings total, this time due to injury however. he again appeared for three different teams - the FCL Phillies, Clearwater Threshers and Jersey Shore BlueClaws, going 0-0, 1.42 in 5 starts, with a total of 12 2/3 innings. He pitched another 10 innings in the Arizona Fall League after the season. The Phillies finally got to see him pitch for an extended stretch in 2022 when he made 32 appearances between the Reading Fightin Phils of the AA Eastern League and Lehigh Valley IronPigs of the AAA International League. Only 7 of his appearances were starts - none in AAA - and in 48 1/3 innings, he gave up 39 hits and struck out 62 batters, but also walked 31. His record was 1-1, 3.54. He did play with the National League team at the 2022 Futures Game, a reflection of his potential more than his production up to that point.

In an unexpected move, on January 9, 2023, the Phillies traded him to the San Francisco Giants for another young pitcher, Yunior Marte, when the Giants found themselves in a crunch after signing free agent Luke Jackson and had to drop one player from their 40-man roster. Teams in that situation usually have to settle for a low-level minor leaguer in exchange, but the Giants were able to land one of the Phillies' better pitching prospects in spite of dealing from a position of weakness. He spent 2023 in the minors, splitting his time between the AA Richmond Flying Squirrels and AAA Sacramento River Cats, going a combined 3-1, 2.45 in 54 games as a reliever, and picking up 15 saves.

He made his major league debut for the Giants on Opening Day, March 28, 2024, pitching a scoreless 8th inning in a 6-4 loss to the San Diego Padres.
