Marqvardsen debuted with Gefle in 2012, going 1 for 14 with a double and a walk. He played with the Sundsvall Mosquitoes in the Swedish minors then they made it to the Elitserien in 2017. He was 0 for 7. In 2018, he hit .159/.296/.204 and went 0-10 with a 15.20 ERA, the league's highest among qualifiers by over 9 points. He led the league in losses (two more than Jakob Claesson), walks (48 in 39 2/3 IP) and runs allowed (85).
In 2019, Erik produced at a .222/.311/.240 clip and had a 2-6, 6.49 record, one loss shy of the lead. He still got the call for the Swedish squad in the 2019 European Championship. He pitched twice and had a 81.00 ERA, highest in the event (Nino Kruhek was close at 74.25). His first game was short and smooth. Relieving Ben Johnson with a 8-1 deficit against Germany in the 8th with two on and two out, he struck out former minor leaguer Pascal Amon to escape further harm. In the 9th, Mikael Fasth relieved him. His other outing was against Croatia, both teams entering with 0-5 records. In the 5th, he relieved Johnson with a 12-2 deficit. He walked Slobodan Gales, allowed a Philip Smith single and a RBI double to Andrija Tomić. After he walked Dario Colović on four pitches, Fasth relieved and let two of the runners score.
