Biographical Information[edit]

Erik Hendricks pitched in the Kansas City Royals system from 1978 to 1980.

He had been drafted five times. Initially, he was taken by the Oakland Athletics in 3rd round of the regular phase of the 1975 January draft. He was then named Golden Gate Conference pitcher of the year in 1975.[1] Then he was taken by the Baltimore Orioles in the 4th round of the secondary phase of the 1975 June draft, the only man taken in that round. The Orioles then took him in the second round of the secondary phase of the 1976 January draft, one pick ahead of pitcher Danny Boone. The New York Yankees took him in the 7th round of the 1977 June draft, one pick ahead of Tom Foley. He finally signed a contract after the Royals took him in the 9th round of the 1978 June draft, a few picks after infielder Steve Sax.

He began his career by going 8-3 with a 2.28 ERA in 12 starts between the GCL Royals and Fort Myers Royals in 1978, averaging more than a strikeout per inning. In 1979, he was 7-7 with a 3.94 ERA in 29 games (20 starts) between Fort Myers and the Jacksonville Suns. His WHIP was 1.745 as he walked 148 batters in 153 innings of work. In 1980, with Jacksonville, Hendricks went 2-6 with a 5.87 ERA in 41 games (2 starts). In 92 innings, he walked 82 batters to just 63 Ks.

Overall, Hendricks went 17-16 with a 4.06 ERA in 82 games (34 starts). In 328 innings, he allowed 252 hits and 281 walks (1.625 WHIP), while striking out 295 batters. He also hit 33 batters and threw 36 wild pitches.
