Biographical Information

Erick Nelson was undrafted but went on to AA and an ERA title overseas.

Nelson began his pro career with the Minneapolis Loons when no major league team was interested. He was 4-2 with a 4.81 ERA in 26 games in 1994. He tied for 9th in the North Central League in games pitched. In '95, he was 1-0 with a 5.68 ERA in 33 outings for the Loons, tying Chad Weisner for the Prairie League lead in appearances.

The Atlanta Braves signed him for 1997 and he split the summer between the Durham Bulls (6-8, Sv, 4.76) and Greenville Braves (0-1, 4.50). His 46 games pitched tied Adam Butler and Adam Milburn for 8th in the Braves farm system. He was sent to the Melbourne Monarchs and was excellent in the 1997-1998 Australian Baseball League at 7-1, 2.83 ERA. He won the league ERA title (.24 over Brent Iddon), tied Iddon for the lowest opponent average and was one shy of win co-leaders Iddon and Phil Dale. Nelson was named the ABL Pitcher of the Year.

Nelson spent 1998 back with Danville (3-1, 2.61) and Greenville (1-2, 9.82 in 4 G). He returned to Melbourne but fell to 2-3, 5.66 in the 1998-1999 ABL and then allowed 8 hits in 3 1/3 innings in the playoffs. Let go by Atlanta, he returned to the independent leagues with the 1999 Duluth-Superior Dukes, for whom he was 1-1 with a save and a 8.22 ERA, walking 18 in 23 innings.
