Erick Abreu pitched professionally from 2002-2013. He spent parts of four seasons in AAA but only pitched 17 games there with a 7.36 ERA and retired with several records for the AA Corpus Christi Hooks. Across nine minor league seasons, Abreu compiled a 40-31 record with 9 saves and a 3.77 ERA. He also pitched for several years in the winter leagues, principally in the Dominican Republic. Abreau spent his final season with the Sultanes de Monterrey of the Mexican League. He had been signed initially by Houston Astros scout Felix Francisco.

Following his playing career, Abreu quickly moved into coaching in the Astros' minor league system. He was slated to return to the Quad Cities in 2020 before COVID-19 caused the minor league season to be cancelled.

In 2024, he was named bullpen coach of the Atlanta Braves.

Abreu also has some experience coaching in the Dominican League. He was the bullpen coach for the Estrellas Orientales in 2018/2019. Abreu then served as the Leones del Escogido pitching coach in 2020/2021. His next foray into the Dominican was shorter as the Tigres del Licey hired him on January 26, 2023 as a pitching coach for the upcoming Caribbean Series. He replaced Jairo Cuevas who had to withdraw due to Seattle Mariners commitments.
