Biographical Information

Eppie Barnes played in the majors for four games but probably had more impact as part of the Special Committee on the Negro Leagues set up by the Hall of Fame from 1971 to 1977 to elect Negro League players to the Hall.

He was one of five major leaguers who were at Colgate University in 1922. He came up to the majors for two games with the 1923 Pittsburgh Pirates and two more with the 1924 team. Both teams were managed by Bill McKechnie. A foul tip broke his nose toward the end of the 1924 season, preventing him from appearing in more games. He and Honey Barnes were at Colgate at the same time, but are apparently not related; they were born in the same year. Eppie later became the baseball coach and director of athletics at Colgate.
