Biographical information[edit]

Pitcher Emerson Hancock was selected by the Seattle Mariners with the 6th overall pick of the 2020 amateur draft, out of the University of Georgia. A native of the Peach State, he had been on pro scouts' radars since high school, and the Arizona Diamondbacks had taken him in the 39th round of the 2017 amateur draft, but he had decided to go on to college. With the Georgia Bulldogs, he had gone 8-3, 1.99 as a sophomore in 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic had cut short his 2020 season after just 4 starts.

He made his professional debut in 2021 with the Everett AquaSox of the High-A West, going 2-0, 2.32 in 9 starts, then finished the season in AA with the Arkansas Travelers, where he made another three starts. The Mariners limited him to 44 2/3 innings in 12 starts, not wanting to over-exert him after what was almost a full season of inactivity the year before. However, they gave him a lot more leeway in 2022, and he responded by going 7-4, 3.75 in 21 starts for Arkansas. Again, they limited the total number of innings he could pitch, keeping him below the 100 IP threshold, as he pitched 98 1/3 innings. He allowed 81 hits, walked 38 batters and struck out 92. He was on the American League team for the 2022 Futures Game which was played at Dodger Stadium on July 16th, and pitched a perfect 6th inning. He returned to Arkansas in 2023 and was at 11-5, 4.32 after 20 starts when he got the call to the majors. In his debut on August 9th, he started against the San Diego Padres and went 5 innings, allowing just 1 run on 2 hits. The game was tied at 1 when he left, but Seattle went on to win, 6-1, thanks to 5 runs in the bottom of the 8th.
