Ely is located in northeastern Minnesota, 40 miles northeast of Virginia, MN. Once an iron ore mining center, Ely is now known as the gateway to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
Ely was the site of the 1980 American Legion World Series which featured future major league players Will Clark, Sid Fernandez, Bob Melvin, and John Cangelosi.
