Biographical Information[edit]

Elton Jackson was a minor league infielder and a college coach.

Jackson signed with the Philadelphia Athletics. He split 1947 between the Martinsville A's (5 for 26) and Red Springs Red Robins (.267 AVG, .333 SLG in 53 G). In 1948, he was with Martinsville (.131/?/.182 in 28 G) and the Moline A's/Kewanee A's (.202/?/.255 in 101 G). In 1949, he batted .232 and slugged .329 as a regular for Kewanee. In 1950, he played briefly for the Savannah Indians (his only A ball action) and hit .266/~.367/.319 for the Tarboro A's. In 1951, he hit .174/.320/.216 for the Salisbury A's, drawing 41 walks in 68 games, to end his pro career.

He served in the US Army during the Korean War then enrolled at the University of Maryland, College Park. He became assistant coach in 1955, while still a student, and was head coach from 1961-1990. He coached several future major leaguers there, including Ron Swoboda, Tom Bradley and Jim Norris.
