Biographical Information[edit]

When he umpired his first major league game on July 23rd, at the start of the abbreviated 2020 season, Edwin Moscoso became just the third native of Venezuela to umpire a major league game. Manny Gonzalez and Carlos Torres had preceded him and two others, David Arrieta and Jose Navas would join them before the end of the season. While some of the 19 umpires who made their debut that year got their chance earlier than would normally have been the case because of the vagaries of the coronavirus pandemic, it was not the case for Moscoso who was already at the front of the line to get to work in the majors, as his assignment to one of the Opening Day series demonstrated. He worked a full slate of 60 games that first year, being assigned to the two western divisions of MLB. He was also the first umpire to wear a triple-digit number (in his case #109) as the first of the umpires promoted from the minor leagues for the season, all of whom wore these special numbers.

He was trained at the MiLB Umpire Academy, then worked in the Venezuelan League, the Gulf Coast League, the New York-Penn League, the Florida State League, the Southern League and the Pacific Coast League. He also worked the 2018 Futures Game in Washington, DC. He was named a permanent member of the major league umpiring crew in 2023.
